Please Watch Your Tone

by Wilson Leung

‘Please Watch Your Tone’ is a design research project which critiques the phenomenon of Asian mimicry typefaces. They aim to imitate the aesthetic of East Asian script and offers a one-dimensional presentation of these languages. The project questions the role that visual communicators play in generating responsible and ethical visual culture into the world. A key element is the typeface Jyut Sans that graphically conveys the tonal movements in spoken Cantonese through a diagrammatic visual system. Through this, it aims to communicate the tonal complexities of Cantonese and display lexical and lingual nuances that are not present in mimicry typefaces.
