by Emily KraljevicBetween 1945 and 1980, 30,000 Croatians migrated to Australia, motivated by deteriorating political and economic circumstances in their homeland. My four grandparents were among this group of immigrants. The values, beliefs, experiences and desires of this minority are reflected in their material culture — the objects, resources and spaces which define their lives. ‘Ovdje’ is a publication which documents the material culture evident in my grandparents’ homes, preserving these cultural artefacts for future generations. The publication includes photographs of spaces and treasured objects, as well as interviews with my grandparents, personal documents, ephemera and illustrations.
